Gender Based Violence Initiative

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pervasive crisis across Africa, with alarming statistics underscoring its severity. According to The Citizen, in South Africa alone, three out of ten women aged 18 and older have experienced GBV. This translates to a woman being murdered every three hours, with femicide rates five times higher than the global average. Such statistics highlight the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to protect and empower women across the continent.

In response to this pressing issue, the African Women Interpretation Centre has launched a transformative initiative aimed at creating safe havens for GBV victims throughout Africa. These sanctuaries offer more than just shelter; they provide counseling, therapy, and mental health support to help survivors heal from their trauma. Recognizing the importance of economic independence, the initiative also focuses on up-skilling victims, equipping them with the tools and training necessary to become active participants in their respective economies. By addressing both the emotional and economic facets of recovery, this program empowers women to rebuild their lives and break free from the cycle of violence.

The impact of this initiative extends beyond individual survivors, promising a ripple effect that can transform communities and societies at large. Empowered women contribute to economic growth, foster healthier families, and inspire societal change. However, the success and expansion of such programs hinge on collective support. We call upon individuals, organisations, and stakeholders to join us and take a stand against GBV by supporting our cause. Your generous donations can help expand these havens, provide essential services, and offer hope to countless women across Africa. Together, we can create a safer, more equitable future for all.
